Great Books, Great Ideas, and the Great Conversation

For the next few months, and potentially the remainder of this year, we will be reading and discussing The Great Books of the Western World in our Leadership Education Colloquiums for adults. I have struggled through many of the Great Books with the question on my mind, "What makes these books great?" Some of them just didn't seem great, in fact some of them seem ridiculous, and some of them are full of false information. After struggling for some time, I found an article by Mortimer Adler, Editor in Chief of the Second Edition of the Great Books. He says:

"As I have recently written elsewhere, the adjective "great" in the phrase "great books" derives its primary meaning from its use in the phrase "great ideas." There are many other criteria by which people make up diverse lists of the books they wish to honor by calling them "great books." But from the primary significance of the adjustive "great" as applied to the great ideas is derived the significance of that adjective as used in the phrase, "the great conversation."

"In other words, we chose the great books on the basis of their relevance to at least 25 of the 102 great ideas. Many of the great books are relevant to a much larger number of the 102 great ideas, as many as 75 or more great ideas, a few to all 102 great ideas. In sharp contrast are the good books that are relevant to less than 10 or even as few as 4 or 5 great ideas. We placed such books in the lists of Recommended Readings to be found in the last section in each of the 102 chapters of the 'Syntopicon.'"

So a Great Book is one full of Great Ideas, and a Great Idea is one that is part of the Great Conversation, and the Great Conversation is the discussion down through the ages of the topics or ideas that have the greatest potential for good or ill when applied in our lives. For example one of the "Great Ideas" listed in the syntopicon is 'Slavery.' The impact of slavery in our world, and the discourse through time on the pros and cons of slavery has been "Great", and thus becomes a "Great Idea". So, although a book within the Great Books series might encourage slavery, even claiming it to be a natural condition for certain people, which I believe is not good or right, the fact remains that it is a "Great idea", an idea that has greatly impacted our world, and can greatly impact me, especially since each work chosen relates to at least 25 great ideas! I hope this helps in your reading and understanding of Great Books.

Come join us for a fun family night were we share what we've been learning this year. There will be a performance program and a finger-food potluck.

The time and place are still being worked out, but we are trying for the beginning of October in the North Pole area.

The purpose of this event is not to show off what we are already skilled at. The purpose is to share what we are learning, and practice skills we are working to improve, in a comfortable setting with friends and family members. Parents, as well as children, are encouraged to participate. Individuals who are not involved with A Thomas Jefferson Education are also welcome to participate.

January Leadership Education Colloquium

Our discussion on January 8th went great. We discussed the Allegory of the Cave found in Book VII of the Republic by Plato. The entire allegory filled only two pages of text, yet we found enough to talk about for 2 1/2 hours. That is what these classics, these great books are about. They provoke enough thought and inspire enough questions that we can spend a lifetime finding the answers. Isaac Newton once said,

"I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

I think many of us felt this same way at the last discussion.

TJEd Lunch Discussions

Because of the holidays, we have chosen to combine November and December's lunch discussions. We would like to celebrate Christmas this lunch discussion by having a potluck on December 11 at 11:30. We are asking everyone to bring a favorite dish along with their own plates and eating utensils.

We thought it would be fun to have a White Elephant gift exchange with the kids during this discussion time. Have fun finding and wrapping up any toys that are no longer needed and bring them to exchange!

For those interested in our book discussions, we have changed the November Discussion (November 13, 6:30pm) from Plato's Allegory of the Cave, to Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The Allegory of the Cave has been moved to January's discussion.

Some questions to ponder as you read Frankenstein: What makes a monster? What makes a man? Should man tamper with creating life? What about modifying life? (like genetic modification) Is man ever right in destroying human life? When? What about other life? When?

Young Statesman's Book Club

I just thought I would share with you the wonderful letter I received from Ms. Hill following her visit to our book club. It was a real treat to have her meet with us and talk to us about her books. I'm glad that she enjoyed her visit with us as much as we enjoyed our visit with her.

Kim...I've been wanting to find time to write to tell you how impressed I am with your group. I've never seen kids who had such good insight into books, characterization, and all that good stuff. Somehow you've managed to teach them to think and to question, and I'm sure you don't know how rare that is, but it is rare. Come to think of it, I've never seen a group of grown-ups with that much spark! I wish you'd tell me your secret so I can pass it on! Please tell the kids I think they're brilliant, and tell them I think their teachers are brilliant too.

Become a Better Mentor

Want a simple way to apply the principle of 'You, Not Them' as you head into the new school year? Want to jump start your mentoring in helping your children receive a leadership education? Begin your own education by reading "A Thomas Jefferson Education" by Oliver DeMille and then attend a discussion of the educational principles taught in this book.

We will be meeting at the Interior Alaska Conservative Coalition office in the Northgate Square Mall, September 24th, 6:30pm-8:30pm to discuss this book. The IACC has graciously let us use their meeting room at no charge, but if you can donate a few dollars to help their cause that would be greatly appreciated. We will 'pass the hat' or have a donation box that evening to facilitate this.

If there is enough interest we will organize a monthly book discussion group that evening to help you get certified in the '5 Pillars of Statesmanship' and discuss the possibility of having 'Face to Face with Greatness' seminars in Fairbanks.

Young Statesman's Reading List For 2009-2010

We so excited to have local author Kirkpatrick Hill speaking to us at our 1st meeting September 17. Ms. Hill is the author of several children's books including The Year of Miss Agnes which the younger group read for book club last year. We are asking that the children come with prepared questions to ask Ms. Hill and it would be helpful if they had read as many of her books as possible before then. Having Ms. Hill speak to us is a real treat, and we are so glad that she has agreed to come. Please, discuss with your children the proper etiquette for this kind of meeting.

Sign-Up for Young Statesman's Book Club

The new school year is fast approaching and now is the time we are all planning our upcoming year. The Young Statesman's Book Club will be starting up again August 20. Jody and I need to know who is planning on attending this year. I will be posting openings on the IDEA email list soon. We will give kids who attended last year first preference, but we will be limiting seats to 10 per group. We did have a waiting list when we started last year and as that may be the case again this year we are asking that only children committed and dedicated to attending each month sign up. We will be charging $10 per child this year to help cover the cost of prizes and handouts. Each child is expected to purchase a copy of the book so they can write in it and use it as a reference at the meetings.
We have an exciting year planned and we look forward to seeing you all again. We will be posting the list of books for the year very soon. Check back often for updates.

Heather Burton, Retreat Leader -
In her lifetime, Heather Burton would like to gather and understand the Truth about loving, learning and leading and become wise. For this reason, she is particularly grateful to have listened to Oliver DeMille speak about the educations of the founders of the United States about 12 years ago. Since that pivotal meeting, Thomas Jefferson Education principles have served an active role in Heather's life and in her family. Sharing principles of TJED-based Leadership Education has become part of Heather's personal mission. She has been fortunate to present community education classes, deliver workshops and speeches at homeschool conferences and teachers' conventions, and organize events based on the TJED model pretty much across Canada and the U.S. Her favorite part of this is the good people she meets. Heather lives on a "townfolk" farm in a log cabin in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies with her husband Allan and their children who range in age from 3 to 20. The Burton family currently includes five llamas, four Eastern European German Shepherds, sixteen Tennessee Walking Horses, and a hen house of chickens. Heather loves to learn with her family, read, write, putter in the kitchen with whole foods, hike, and grow things. She works from her home for The Arbinger Institute as Director of Community Services, which she also loves, and serves as the president of the Leadership Education Association of Families and Friends (LEAFF). From September to May, she mentors Scholar Phase students in math and science.

TJED Lunch Discussions

We had a great time last Friday at the lunch discussion. Because we had new moms again this month our discussion focused on the basic principles of TJEd. While I am excited to see our group continue to grow, I am finding difficulty in addressing the basics and still focusing on the questions of those who have already been applying the principles. To help with this, I have decided to post some of those questions on here so we can begin "discussing" them before the next meeting. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post them.

Here's a list of questions:
"How do you address having children in different phases?"
"What do you do when your child won't progress to the next phase?"
"How are you applying the 7 Keys in your home?
"What are some roadblocks that you are encountering?"

Leadership Education Colloquium

We had a great, sometimes heated (warm but friendly) conversation June 19 at the Leadership Education Colloquium on many subjects including, but not limited to the United States Constitution, parenting, education, curriculum, religion, and so forth. I left feeling intellectually stimulated and with a desire to learn more.

We made a change of plans concerning what we’re going to read for the remainder of the summer. Instead of splitting the remaining pages of ‘The 5000 Year Leap’ we are instead going to discuss all the principles (1 through 28) in part II of the book on July 10. (By the way this will require reading two principles per day Monday through Friday starting 22 June through 9 July). I will be posting my experiences and insights on younotthem.blogspot.com before each weekday morning as I read and study these principles to help elicit discussion in the days before we meet again. Please visit and feel free to comment.

Our August 14^th discussion will be on “The Fourth Turning” by William Strauss and Neil Howe. This is a significant increase in reading, but very doable.

Leadership Education Colloquium

This Friday (June 12, 2009) I believe was the scheduled date for our colloquium on the US Constitution and Part 1 of “The 5000 Year Leap”. I would like to change that to the following Friday (June 19, 2009).
We will use the remainder of the summer to study Part II of the 5000 year leap.

July 10, 2009
We will discuss the 1st through the 14th principle. (Pages 35 through 178)

August 14, 2009
We will discuss the 15th through the 28th principle. (Pages 179 through 312)
